In the works: Viewbook V3, The next generation portfolio website builder

By Rien | April 26th, 2011 | 41 Comments

We are very excited to tell you about ‘Viewbook V3′ which is currently being developed. The last two months we have been creating a whole new vision on what Viewbook should be in the near future. Here is a rundown of what we came up with.

Ronny and Paul presenting design ideas.– Music by: Tyler wat doe je?

With Viewbook V3 we bring you a completely new ‘next generation’ website builder. A flexible design tool that gives you more control on the creation and customization of your portfolio website. With the idea of you being able to create your portfolio perfectly, we’re working on the following ideas and features:

Modules & Galleries
We introduce a new concept called ‘modules’. A module allows you to easily drag & drop bits of functionality onto the stage. Portfolio websites need outstanding galleries and representations of your work. What we are creating are fully configurable collections, albums and contact sheets. Including horizontal and vertical scrolling galleries. Our focus is to offer you the choice how you want your images to display, including flexible cropping, sizing, alignment, spacing, and many more options. We’re putting a lot of effort in this to make Viewbook outstanding when it comes down to image display.

Many other features as modules
Simply drag & drop twitter feeds, social buttons, text-fields, images & video anywhere on your page. No need to add custom code or markup to text-fields anymore.

Adjustable page formats & layouts
You can start with predefined page formats. That works for most people. But if you think your site requires more options or a different composition, you can change many properties of the page; it’s layout, modules, order and alignment of elements. You can add new modules to your page, and create pages that combine galleries, video and text for example. This allows creating many design options and variations, while keeping the user interface simple to understand.

Redefined page editor
Center-stage in the the website builder is the page editor. This is what you will be looking at the most of the time, while creating your site. It consist out of editor panels (for page properties, modules and selection settings) and the stage ( your webpage canvas ).

Custom CSS
If you want all influence on how things look, we’ll add and option for custom CSS so webdesigners can change the appearance of any element on the page.

New user interface
With a lot more features and customization options, the interface still needs to maintain its clarity. Therefore we are redesigning the user interface, to let you work more intuitively and make better use of space. Bottom line is, we want it to be easy enough for people without webdesign knowledge and powerful enough for webdesigners. That’s a real challenge.

Other improvements
There’s too much to mention here but we’re also implementing a lot of other smaller features like; favicons, better video display, more menu styling options and scalable backgrounds.

That’s a quick overview of things to come. I understand it’s still very abstract. It doesn’t matter if you don’t get the terminology just jet. Honestly, we have daily discussions on what things are called, and just started writing the Viewbook Terminology Manual.

So when will it be ready?
We have an idea but as with all larger software projects, it is very, very hard to estimate time needed for completion. So I’m not going to give a date, let’s say we’re working hard to get it released later this year. We keep you posted during the process as much as possible, and let you know when things become more clear.

Your existing sites will keep working in V3!
You don’t need to worry about redesigning your complete site from scratch in V3. So there’s no need to wait for V3 to come out. We’re also not planning to change prices or other terms.

If you have any feature requests please add them to our feature requests page. This way other people can comment and vote.

  3. I can imagine. That gives me time till then to finally arrange my portfolio, scan tons of negatives to eventually go “pro plan” and build my portfolio ;)

  4. Great!

  5. Sounds good. More flexibility, and, the horizontal scrolling gallery option coming…!

Also very useful would be the ability to choose the menu color when something in the menu is clicked on. Though that could be done with the CSS option I guess…

  6. Good ideas! When?

  7. All of it sounds amazing. Way to go, guys. You’re making VB more attractive and easier to advertise to friends all the time.

  8. That’s gonna be great. Love you guys. Urs

  9. Will the colors and contrast be less affected by the flash template in V3? I love my Viewbook site but have increasingly noticed the color and contrast degradation. What do you think?

    Comment by Peter — April 29, 2011 @ 4:42 pm

  10. @Peter. We’re creating completely new galleries that do not make use of Flash anymore. No degradation of color and contrast anymore, although it is very minimal in the current Flash gallery.

  11. CAN. NOT. WAIT. Hope I get hands on these sooner than later. I love viewbook now but I think I’ll be loving it even more.

  12. Really excited about the upcoming changes. Thanks to all you guys for continuing to improve the site and functionality. Looking forward to the new launch!

  13. Okay what if I can’t wait? When I build my portfolio with the current V2, will it easily migrate or will I have to do everything all over again with V3?

    Comment by Kaymir Stark — May 1, 2011 @ 7:50 pm

  14. @Kaymir: Don’t hesitate to create your website in the current version. We’ll make it possible to switch/export current websites to V3. At least the basic structure so you can use the design features of V3 to style your site in the V3 system.

  15. I am in! will soon be part of the viewbook family

    Comment by Kaymir Stark — May 2, 2011 @ 7:58 am

  16. I would like a visitors book / notice board where people could leave comments on what they thought about your photographs or leave testimonies about the service they received. They would not show live until I read them and pressed a button to show them in public.

I look forward to V3 but what you have is already fantastic and I can’t wait to get it going live…..

    Comment by Brendan Cullen — May 2, 2011 @ 8:49 pm

  17. Another idea perhaps to have a like button on every photo so it would show how many visitors liked your image…..

    Comment by Brendan Cullen — May 2, 2011 @ 8:51 pm

  18. This all sounds great! I cant wait.. One feature that would be great would be audio file hosting to make it easier to play music on our sites! maybe something simple with an on/off button that will play continuously while navigating the site. I’ve managed some with coding but its definitely not convenient. Overall looking forward to it all though, thanks!

    Comment by Eric — May 3, 2011 @ 4:41 pm

  19. Can’t wait. Can we have blogs on Viewbook. I mean the actual BLOG, not just blog feeds

    Comment by Lam — May 4, 2011 @ 2:07 pm

  20. @Lam, did you already take a look at our Tumblr integration? http://support.viewbook.com/entries/276850-how-do-i-integrate-tumblr-into-viewbook

    Comment by Rien // Viewbook — May 4, 2011 @ 9:04 pm

  21. Thats sounds so great! Cant wait to see the V3. And yes I already missed the horizontal scrolling for gallery images! Changing the background images for the whole background ( not only in a corner or centered above) would be great as well! Monique

    Comment by Monique Zoellner — May 9, 2011 @ 1:21 pm

  22. Can we please please have drop down menu’s for the top?
I find myself increasingly limited by this, sub menus would be great. A blog system like Graph paperpress would be amazing addition too!

And a question will are sites SEO placements be still intact with the new updates?

    Comment by Emmett — May 11, 2011 @ 3:12 pm

  23. Also to see the albums description in the sidebar (instead of the page description). That would rock my world :)

    Comment by Kaymir Stark — May 11, 2011 @ 10:33 pm

  24. Nice to give us a sneak preview of what you guys are planning to do. You make me very curious right now. Please keep us updated.

    Comment by Marieke Koudstaal — May 12, 2011 @ 2:40 pm

  25. @Emmet, we won’t change anything SEO wise!

We are looking into the option for ‘sub-pages’, I guess it would make a lot of people happy…

    Comment by Rien // Viewbook.com — May 12, 2011 @ 2:57 pm

  26. You’ll have sub-menus?

    Comment by Neil — May 13, 2011 @ 2:51 am

  27. @Neil, Yeah we’re looking at an option for sub-menus.

  28. I would love to see a feature that allows for my clients to proof their images. Allow for some type of indicator that will tell me they like/dislike an image. A really simple proofing system. It’s so much easier then having a client email me file numbers, or use some other 3rd party app that does not maintain the look and feel of my portfolio/site.

    Comment by Jaymer — May 13, 2011 @ 11:09 am

  29. Hi Guys! Congrats for the new comming project!
I want to ask about the amount of pictures to store, I understand that is 5000, is there a way to increase the capacity? or what options would you suggest me.
I make an album for every customer I have and they look to their pics on line, so I have to be deleting pics almost everytime i upload something because I am almost full in my capacity-

    Thanks

  30. @Jesus, please send a support request and we’ll take care of it: http://support.viewbook.com/anonymous_requests/new

    Comment by Rien — May 19, 2011 @ 9:17 am

  31. @Jaymer, we’ll be working on a simple proofing system later this year. I know we keep saying this, but it has priority for us too.

    Comment by Rien — May 19, 2011 @ 9:33 am

  32. Hey guys, really excited about the developments. The simple clean design and great galleries are what brought me to Viewbook but Ive definitely wanted to make some layout changes and look forward to being able to do so.
Video is very important as its a service we’re starting to offer clients and it sounds like it will be a lot easier to implement in V3. Can you make a way for a link to a blog open in a new tab or window instead of directing people away from our website? Also, as a wedding photographer I second the proofing gallery request. I would love to be able to have clients be able to go to a password protected “client” area of the website to view their images.
Thanks for all the work guys! Looking forward to seeing it.

    Comment by Josh — May 26, 2011 @ 3:20 pm

  33. Not sure if this was asked yet, but it’s something that has been bugging me since starting, it’s the ability to zoom in and out of a thumbnail before choosing an image to represent a gallery. Obviously you can pan before selecting an area of your image, but if zooming was available it would be incredibly useful!

Thanks for the fb on my last posts too, you’s are doing a great job!

  34. It’s been quite a while since you updated on the V3 status – any news?

  36. Looking forward to a status update, will it be this month?
Any idea if your prices will be changing with the new V3

    Comment by Paul — June 8, 2011 @ 12:25 am

  37. @Paul As mentioned in the post, prices will not change.

You can expect an update definitely this month!

    Comment by Rien // Viewbook.com — June 10, 2011 @ 1:08 pm

  38. From your description of “modules” it isn’t clear whether you will effectively be implementing something that a lot of users have said they would find useful: the equivalent of linking collection pages to collection pages as well as to albums. Have you got this covered?

    Comment by John — June 16, 2011 @ 8:40 pm

  39. @John, definitely. We make it possible to link everything to everything!
