Your ideal iPad Portfolio app?

By Rien | August 23rd, 2010 | 22 Comments

Update: See our iPad Portfolio page with the latest announcements!

We’ve already shared our enthousiasm about the iPad. We can now tell you that Viewbook is in the process of creating a native iOS portfolio app for the iPad and iPhone that syncs with your Viewbook Albums.

A couple of key requirements we’ve formulated are:

  • The option to store Albums locally so you can view them offline, without an internet connection.
  • A nice visual overview with big thumbs of all your locally stored Albums.
  • The option to set a default portfolio that opens as soon as you launch the app, so you can directly show your work without first looking up which album you want to show.
  • The option to easily email a link to the online version of your album/portfolio.

Do you already use your iPad or iPhone to show your work? What are your experiences? Do you have other ideas that would make it ideal for you?

Let us know in the comments.

  1. I don’t own an iPad (yet! I am looking forward to getting one soon though!)

I very much like your suggestion to store albums offline as not everyone has a good mobile signal and prospective clients are not likely to want to allow you access to their wifi. I have an iPhone app for another photography website but this problem is infuriating so I’ve had to go back to resizing and copying images to the iPhone via iTunes – not ideal or very professional.

  2. I take it the app will also allow you to create and manage albums as well? What about organising photos within albums and albums in pages?
    Thanks

  3. Ideal would be if the app had the option to manage your account e.g. Upload to your iphone album. Change settings for your website etc.

  4. I am shooting some commercials and shorts and would love it if your Ipad app could make sure that videos played well on the ipad and could be locally saved.

  5. Hi,

    Great idea!
It would be great if you support Android as well. I checked Caroline Johnson on my Android. Such kind of app seems pretty good to me. It also has the abilty to easily connect to her social media.
When do you expect the viewbook app to be ready?

    Kind regards!

  6. I am strongly considering joining viewbook based on the iphone and ipad integration. If you were to make an app I think it would be amazing if there were a way to direct clients with iphones and ipads to the app store to download for themselves a “photographer specific app”. it would be a good way to stay in front of the client as well seeing as they wouldn’t be quick to delete the app from their device.

  7. nice, i like this idea of apps for iphone…
i hope it will support iphone4 as the mobile portfolio does not support iphone4 retina display, the photos become pixelated…
i hope viewbook can fix this soon…

  8. Thanks all for your input, and if you have more please keep it coming. We’re designing the first version of the app now and plan to release it in a few months.

@Kevin Thanks for your comment, we develop for the iPhone4 as well for sure, that retina display is beautiful!

  9. Agree with Blake on the app link. I think if I could have a link on my website that my clients could download your app and then enter a tog code that become an app / album for that photographer. The options from this point on are limitless! Think how pwerfull if the app had push functions, so say you could simply update any of your clinets using your app that you have an offer on etc etc. Doug on my iPad :)

  10. I would definitely like to see the tools needed to manage the galleries.

  11. It’s a great idea Rien. It would be ideal if i can use Image Manager in ipad. It can’t be done now because (i guess) viewbook image manager uses flash.

I also love to see “Quick menu” function.

  12. Thanks for all the answers so far. Some great input here. Thanks. We think we are going to make you happy, but we’ll do it in steps. One of the more exiting things is a way for iPad / iPhone owners to follow you, and have a showcase of your latest work on their iPads. See comment #9 by Doug. Many possibilities here that are new and exiting. Thanks again.

#9 tageonir; the image manager is not ready for the iPad because it does not support all the touch events on the iPad as of yet We’re still looking at this.

  13. I am very interested in the ipad – viewbook combination. as soon you are ready with the app, i will buy the ipad (next generation?)

  14. I am signing up for Viewbook for this reason. I know that Squarespace has a full management app for iPad and it works pretty well, though the site is just not “easy” enough for my purposes. I just want to upload my images, move them around, add my bio and blog a bit. lol

I love the idea of me or my clients being able to export a mini app that’s all about me and my work. It would be extremely unique in the industry and a major sales point!

  15. A nice feature to the app would be able to work on the website from the app and also to view website in offline mode so people can actually get a look at the website.

    Also smoother transitions between photographs.

  16. I really like the password protection when sending certain files to individual clients & would hope that the iphone app would continue this great feature. It would be great if the program also identified the IP address of the user so that the link could not be passed around with the password – to others.

I’ve been waiting and searching for an app such as viewbook for the iphone that would allow the user to download a .pdf to a storage folder on the phone that could be accessed by the user when sending an email (much like one can now send audio or picture files on the iphone).

PDF’s are a great way to condense imagery and transfer content.

Mybe you could incorporate this a bit into your app.

    thanks,

    Greg

  17. Cant wait to see the app! There really is a gap in the app market for something like this, the default photo album on the ipad doesnt allow organisation etc.

  18. @Dayle Fullerton,

Not to take the wind out of this announcement but there are plenty of iPad portfolio apps that can present your work in a professional way. They’ve been on the app store since July last year at least.

Here are the ones I’ve found so far: FolioBook, Padfolio, Padport, Xtrafolio, Collections for iPad, Portfolio to go, Portfolio, Flexfolio.

  19. Just a short note: We’re making very good progress. You can expect an announcement of our iPad portfolio app, that integrates seamlessly with Viewbook which is not the case with all existing iPad portfolio apps, very, very soon. It will be very clean, very simple and displays your work perfectly.

  20. My iPad arrivee today and very much looking forward to this app as the ipad is to become my walk around portfolio!

  21. is this compatible with Ipod touch G4?

    Comment by Lui Rincon — March 19, 2011 @ 4:25 am

  22. No. It won’t be a universal app. Screen dimensions ask for very different apps / approaches.
