Viewbook Websites compatible with the iPad and iPhone.

By Alrik | May 5th, 2010 | 37 Comments

After spending some time with the iPad there’s no doubt: it’s such a nice device! We’re particulary impressed by the experience of browsing, the interaction being wonderfully direct on the beautiful bright display. We’re sure that many visual creatives will show their work on this. Therefore, we optimized Viewbook for the iPad as well as the iPhone.

Now the internet has definetely gone mobile, it’s essential your portfolio website is available properly. It should look good and work well on any device and screen size. Therefore, Viewbook optimizes sites for the devices they’re viewed on. When opening your site on the iPad, your site will be like you’re used to, but albums open full screen in the native looking browser shown above.

Native looking albums
When opening an album on the iPad, it will open full screen in a gallery with a native look and feel, and including the intuitive swipe navigation.

Fully optimized websites for iPhone
When browsing to a Viewbook site on an iPhone, a smaller, more minimal site will open. When opening an album, it will be displayed full screen wasting not a pixel on the small screen. The site will be automatically generated. Visit your Viewbook on an iPhone and have a look!

Update: new version of mobile galleries released.

  2. Hey… …I cannot see my viewbook or any of the images on my web site on the iPhone. Viewbook simply does not work with my iPhone and I was wondering if others had the same results I am having. Maybe it’s something I am doing wrong… …or maybe my iPhone is old. I am using a 3G Version 3.0 (7A341) 8Gig device.
    Can someone please help?
    Xandro.

  3. Great, but my images all have a wide black border around them in iPhone view.
    Wonder what I’m doing wrong.

  4. Hello Xandro, did you try updating it to a newer iPod system? This should solve it. If you still have trouble, please mail me at support@viewbook.com and we’ll investigate // Alrik

  5. @Rob, the size of the images that the iPhone displays depend on the proportions of the images. We work on refinements for this, it would be nice if all images with different proportions display full width or hight on the screen, without black border. // Alrik

  7. None of the sites that I have View Book featured on can be seen on my IPad. As a matter of fact I can’t even pull up the View Book website on my I Pad because it sates that I need adobe flash.

I’ve been to other sites that have been optimized for the Iphone and IPad and they run smooth and I don’t have to do any thing special.

    So whats going on here?

  8. Is their a secret on embedding in order to get view book to show up on the iphone and ipad. When I go ti your examples, some sites show up where others do not!

    Comment by Tal — June 2, 2010 @ 2:23 pm

  9. Hi Tal, all sites of Viewbook users made with Viewbook work on the iPad, with still some minor things to enhance. The Viewbook albums embedded in other websites don’t work on the iPad yet, we are working on a solution for this as well. Hope this answers your question?

  10. I am unable to upload photos from Lightroom 3.0, Will Viewbook be upgraded for use with 3.0 soon?

    Thank you.

  11. Hello Cal, the plugin got updated, you can download the last version from http://www.viewbook.com/tools/

  12. Love the idea, but I just checked out my (in progress) portfolio on the ipad, and it seems it’s formatted for photography only, which isn’t my medium. My images are of varying sizes and proportions and require a white background to work. On the ipad there is a heavy black background when you go into an album which throws everything off – also I can’t see any captions! The descriptions in my portfolio are very necessary. Any way to personalize how our portfolios are viewed on the ipad? Thanks for any help!

    Comment by Cat — June 20, 2010 @ 4:22 pm

  13. Hi Cat, we are working on a solution to also display the captions on the iPad / iPhone, for now it’s swiping full screen images only. In the future we will offer more possibilities but some time will go over that. Hope this helps you out.

  16. great idea where do is sign up….

    Comment by Karl Bratby — July 11, 2010 @ 7:18 am

  17. I know you mean well but this is very misleading “Viewbook fully compatible with the Iphone and Ipad”. If the embedding does not work how is it fully compatible.
I know you say you are working on it, but you are still misleading the public.

    Comment by Tal — July 13, 2010 @ 9:37 pm

  18. Well my website does not work particularly smoothly and at times not at all on the ipad or the iphone. The transitions are painfully slow, they often show 1.5 images on the screen at any one time and when the ipad is rotated a couple of times the images will not reduce back to full screen. Thumnails don’t all show up either.

    Comment by Neil — July 14, 2010 @ 2:02 am

  19. Almost signed up for full package, then tested the example sites on iphone : 0

Such a shame, really beautiful platform, love at first sight, but she needs a lot of work under the hood : )

Almost built a site for a client on your platform, so close but no cigar c’mon you can do it.

Do away with the icons in the full gallery, on the iphone/pad, and make it a simple full screen finger swipe (like facebook) and you have a winner.

Keep in mind that i have no technical expertise : )

  20. Hi there, just like some of the users above, I cannot access my website or albums on our Ipad. Cannot login either, get a message I need to upgrade the flash player, which we all know is no option yet….

    Can you help me out?

    Comment by Annemieke — July 23, 2010 @ 3:09 pm

  21. @Tal You are right, the Viewbook websites and albums are compatible, but the embedded albums in other sites not yet. I’ll remove the ‘fully’ from the title of this post.

@Neil The loading and performance of the transitions also depends on the speed of the connection, mobile internet isn’t always as fast and stable as we like it. Did you try it on wifi? If you still have trouble please mail me at support@viewbook.com and we’ll investigate.

@Richard Viewbook albums are full screen swipe right now and the sites convert to iPhone version. Some of the example sites have embedded vimeo vids on the homepage, or have a splash page with a background, these don’t work well on the iPhone. The background issue and some other minor bugs still need fixing. Perhaps we better put up some other sites as examples that do work 100% on iPhone, while 99% works 100%:)

@Annemieke Your Viewbook sites and albums should all work good on the iPad, are you still having trouble? If yes please mail me at support@viewbook.com It’s not possible to acces the Image Manager in the iPad or iPhone, editing can only be done on a desktop / laptop.

  22. On the iphone my site loads but the menu is hidden behind the home page photo! Guys, this isn’t compatable at all, really disappointing…
It’s a great platform but we need real Iphone and Ipad compatability. Please!!!

    Comment by Jacob — August 14, 2010 @ 9:50 am

  23. @Jacob Strange, we haven’t heard about that problem before. 99% of the Viewbook sites work beautifully on the iPhone/iPad. If you give us your url we’ll look into it. Did you perhaps create a splash page or embedded a single image in a text page?

Some news, we’re working on a next version of the Viewbook gallery for iPhone/iPad that also displays captions and has other new features. And yes, the Viewbook iPhone/iPad app is in development, your input is very welcome http://www.viewbook.com/weblog/2010/08/23/your-ideal-ipad-portfolio-app/

  24. On iPad it works very slow.
It’s some methods that allow to solve this problem.
If you want, we can do it for you!:)

  26. I just tried my site on iphone 3Gs, and it displays
all images small with a large black border on all sides.
Therefor I guess that the viewbook site is not compatible with iPhone…?

In reply to your announcement of working on a feature to show websites off line on your Ipad, this would be great and very helpful.
    Looking forward to it!!

  31. Hi there, I tested my website on my iPhone 4 and the photos are NOT full screen. There is lots of black around. What happened?

    Comment by Gerben — October 26, 2010 @ 9:07 pm

  32. My new Viewbook site does not display correctly on my iphone 3G. In the albums there is a large amount of black space. Also, in the albums there is no way to return to other pages on the site. Also, titles do not display. This is _very_ disappointing after all the time and money that I have invested in this site.

  37. Hello this is kinda of off topic but I was wanting to know if blogs use WYSIWYG editors or if you have to manually code with HTML. I’m starting a blog soon but have no coding know-how so I wanted to get guidance from someone with experience. Any help would be enormously appreciated!
